Serious Play

Addressing Mis- and dis-information through casual style game play

The intent of this research was to help individuals recognize and protect themselves against manipulation. We explore how logical fallacies and loaded language are used to manipulate messages we encounter every day. We demonstrate how Loki’s Marauders was prototyped to educate players about logical fallacies and loaded words when employed against them through a fun interactive storyline. Players learn techniques to identify and respond to manipulation through a hands-on competitive multiplayer experience.

Attendees will see a use case of developing a serious game for educating about manipulative language, as well as learn about the design choices tied to achieving the serious goals of the game.

Beyond Project Teams: Why relationships matter for innovation

Project teams fail when relationships are treated as transactional and time-bound. Innovation is built upon reciprocal relationships of trust and camaraderie. This presentation explores how to develop vibrant interpersonal relationships that reduce ego and increase on-going connection. We’ll explore how professional relationships look within a start-up and among enterprise teams. Drawing on personal experiences and research, participants will be able to identify clear steps to enhance their relationships, beyond a single project team, to successfully increase innovation and foster long-term satisfaction. Participants will leave with a framework for developing stronger relationships with their peers.

Josh concisely helped me identify new ways to grow and develop my design organization. His perspective would be valuable to anyone looking to build a strong team culture.

Student Team – Keynote

Scout: A mentoring platform for all generations

Each year, Microsoft Research sponsors a semester-long class at leading design schools. In interdisciplinary teams of two to four students, students design a user experience prototype that solves a real-world problem. From these groups, a representative team from each school presents their work at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington USA.

Design Expo began as partnership between Microsoft and Apple to integrate technology into the curriculum of design schools worldwide. Their goal is to build long term relationships with the design schools, and build community across schools.

Josh and his team brought a fresh perspective on caring for the elderly through deliberate co-creation and empathetic development with the Pittsburgh Community
